23 March 2026 — The ToFuel project has officially launched its website at www.tofuel-project.eu, marking a key milestone in the project's first months of activity.
The site brings together everything you need to know about ToFuel: the scientific challenges it addresses, the five core technologies at its heart, the 11 partner organisations from 7 European countries, and the project's latest news and deliverables.
ToFuel is a Horizon Europe-funded project (Grant Agreement No. 101235233) coordinated by TU Graz, AT. Running from January 2026 to December 2029, it develops an integrated biorefinery concept to transform tomato production and processing residues into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and valuable co-products — contributing to aviation decarbonisation and advancing circular bioeconomy principles.
The scale of the challenge is significant: the EU is projected to require around 3.2 million tonnes of SAF by 2030. ToFuel's approach, converting tomato pomace through five interconnected processes including microbial lipid production, algae-based carbon capture, and biomass fractionation, could contribute up to 0.3 million tonnes to that target.
